Writing Resource Center

Writing is an integral part of lawyering. Excellence in legal writing is often the cornerstone of success in the profession. Recognizing this, The John Marshall Law School offers a rigorous writing curriculum that spans four semesters and also offers students an in-house Writing Resource Center where students can refine their skills in this new discourse. The Center is staffed by three professional advisors and is directed by a full-time writing specialist. Advisors meet with students in one-on-one conferences, tailoring their assistance to individual students' needs. The Center also offers interactive group workshops on a variety of legal writing topics.

Students use the Writing Resource Center throughout their legal education. New students adjusting to the unique demands of legal writing often find it particularly helpful to meet with a writing Advisor. Typically, more than half of all new students work with an Advisor during the first year of law school. Continuing students, especially those enrolled in Lawyering Skills or paper courses, regularly use the Center to fine-tune their writing. Writing Advisors also help advanced degree students, exiting students who are seeking jobs, and students for whom English is a second language. Writing Advisors are available to help with questions ranging from basic grammar to complex organization.

The Writing Resource Center works closely with the Lawyering Skills Department to learn about student assignments and individual professors' writing styles. Writing Advisors attend seminars and workshops to stay abreast of new trends in legal writing. Lawyering Skills faculty and Writing Resource Center Advisors work toward the common goal of helping all John Marshall Law School students achieve excellence in legal writing.
