Diversity Affairs Committee

Diversity Week 2008
Celebrating Culture and Exploring Diversity in Law & Politics
Celebrate Diversity Reception, March 27, 2008 | 5 - 7 p.m.

The Diversity Affairs Committee (DAC) is recognized and supported by The Student Bar Association as its own permanent committee. The DAC hosts events to expose JMLS students to a multicultural and diverse atmosphere and legal education. The DAC also address concerns of students who are represented by these organizations and is dedicated to the advancement of historically under-represented people based on ethnicity, race, religion, gender or sexual orientation.

The DAC commits to documenting, determining and presenting any concerns to the administration for appropriate action and ensuring that these determinations are addressed by offering and implementing solutions.

Diversity at our school affects law school rankings, ABA accreditation, and the JMLS reputation with law firms and agencies. The DAC strives to strengthen the JMLS reputation both locally and nationally. We encourage the support of fellow JMLS students and faculty by helping to exemplify and develop JMLS' inclusiveness and diversity through the DAC.

In previous years, a John Marshall faculty committee created a report with suggestions on how the John Marshall community could promote diversity for current law students and during the admissions process for prospective students. Based on this faculty report, the Diversity Affairs Committee has drafted a proposal titled the Diversity Affairs Initiative, that will encourage ways in which the faculty and Board of Trustees can put many of these ideas into effect.

During the 2007 Fall Orientation for the incoming class, DAC Chair Vaishali Rao addressed students about the importance of diversity and respecting fellow John Marshall Students.

In early 2008, the American Bar Association Law Student Division granted funds to DAC to help subsidize diversity activities. The DAC used these funds to plan and host its first official program, Diversity Week 2008, March 24-28. Other sponsors of Diversity Week programming included Plymouth Bar & Restaurant, SmithAmundsen LLC, and Querrey & Harrow, Ltd.
