Following law school, where he was a contributing editor to the University of Michigan Law Review, David Schwartz was an associate with the Chicago law firm Jenner & Block, focusing on intellectual property law. More recently, Professor Schwartz was a partner at an intellectual property boutique law firm in Chicago.
As a practitioner, Professor Schwartz focused on patent, copyright, trademark, and trade secrets litigation, patent and trademark prosecution, and intellectual property-related transactions. He is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Professor Schwartz has published articles and spoken at conferences on a wide variety of intellectual property topics. Professor Schwartz's most recent article, Practice Makes Perfect? An Empirical Study of Claim Construction Reversal Rates in Patent Cases (available at papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=1012949 ) will be published in the Michigan Law Review. He is an active member of the Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago and recently served as the chair of its Biotechnology Committee. Professor Schwartz has been an adjunct professor at the University of Illinois Law School, where he taught advanced patent law.
Professor Schwartz joined the John Marshall faculty in 2006. He teaches Intellectual Property Law Survey, Patent and Trade Secret Law, Intellectual Property Litigation, and Civil Procedure.
