Individual career counseling is available to all currently enrolled students and alumni of The John Marshall Law School. To schedule an appointment, call 312/987-1402 or stop by the Career Services Office in Room 405. Dennis Mazur, the CSO Coordinator, handles scheduling for all counselors except Dean Hajek who handles her own calendar. To schedule with Dean Hajek, e-mail her directly at 6hajek@jmls.edu
Career counselors are assigned to all entering law students their first semester at John Marshall. Although students will hopefully interact with multiple members of the career services staff, the counselor to which a student is initially assigned will remain their “primary counselor” until the student graduates. This counselor should serve as the first point of contact for all career-related questions. Therefore, when scheduling an appointment, please ask to be scheduled with your assigned counselor.
Career Service Counselors are assigned as follows:
Day Students:
May Graduates (divided by section designation provided first semester):
D1: Monica Torres-Linares
D2: Laurel Hajek
D3: Rachel Dawson
D4: Pascale Bishop
January Graduates
JA09D: Kim Isemann
JA10D: Stacia Goldstein
JA11D: Kim Isemann
Evening Students: Rachel Dawson
LL.M. & M.S. Students: Laurel Hajek
Alumni: Please call the Career Services Office 312/987-1402 to schedule an appointment with one of the career counselors.
Counselors’ schedules tend to fill up quickly so students are encouraged not to wait until the last minute to schedule and appointment. However, the staff understands problems develop and occasionally students may need immediate assistance. The CSO staff will do its best to accommodate you in such situations. If you have special circumstances needing immediate attention, please alert Dennis Mazur, the CSO coordinator, to the situation and he will do his best to put you in touch with a counselor as quickly as possible.
Career counselors, in addition to serving as “primary counselors”, also specialize in different areas of counseling. By concentrating in different areas of law or student sectors, the staff hopes to better serve the needs of students and alumni, keep up to date on events occurring in those areas of law, and provide specialized counseling. Areas of expertise are as follows:
Laurel Hajek: Intellectual Property, Federal Work Study, and LL.M./M.S. student counseling
Kimberly Isemann: Judicial Clerkships, Federal Work Study
Rachel Dawson: Public Interest, Government, Fellowships, Evening and Part-Time Student Counseling
Pascale Bishop: International Law, Private Sector, Non-Legal and Alternative Careers, Programming
Monica Torres-Linares: Diversity Initiatives
Stacia Goldstein: Mentoring Program, receptions, and other CSO programs
Reminder: Students in their first semester of law school are not allowed to meet with their assigned career counselor until the third month of the semester. Therefore, students beginning in the fall semester must wait to schedule a meeting until November 1st and students beginning in the spring semester must wait until March 1st. These rules are dictated by the National Association for Law Placement and will be strictly enforced by the CSO. Part-time evening students seeking non-legal work are not required to follow these guidelines and may schedule a meeting with Rachel Dawson, the evening student counselor, to discuss their non-legal job search at their convenience.
