LEADING THE WAY IN INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY LEGAL EDUCATION
Reasons to Study Intellectual Property Law at John Marshall
The IP LLM Experience at John Marshall
The John Marshall Law School is a pioneer in intellectual property education and one of its leading providers today.
In 1940, far sighted educators at the law school saw the advances in science and the arts that would produce tremendous growth in intellectual endeavors and associated increases in intellectual property concerns. They responded by offering a specialized one-year patent law course in cooperation with what is now the Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago. This was one of the first specialized IP programs in America.
Over the more than 65 years since, John Marshall has expanded its IP course offerings as the field of IP has expanded. The result is one of the most extensive sets of IP offerings in this country. In 2007 alone, there were more than 30 specialized IP courses taught at John Marshall by top IP professors and practitioners in the IP-rich legal environment of Chicago. According to an independent survey conducted in 2005, the John Marshall Law School offers the most IP courses of any law school in the United States.1
By virtue of having provided instruction in IP law for over 65 years, the John Marshall Law School has acquired a world-wide reputation for excellence in IP education. As a result, the school has attracted a substantial number of students from all parts of the world to come to Chicago and study IP law in the United States. By studying IP law at John Marshall, you will have a chance to meet and learn with students having diverse legal backgrounds from around the world, but a shared interest in IP law and its impact on creative activities. While the backgrounds of our students vary somewhat from year to year, in the last five years students have come to John Marshall to study IP law from Argentina, Brazil, China, the Czech Republic, Colombia, Germany, India, Korea, Lebanon, Mexico, Panama, Taiwan, Thailand and Turkey. While here, they have both benefitted from and contributed to the multi-cultural environment that John Marshall and the City of Chicago have to offer. Many of our LLM graduates are now teaching in IP programs in prestigious educational institutions overseas.
The John Marshall Law School is dedicated to training law students and attorneys in the ever changing features of intellectual property law, one of the fastest growing and most exciting fields of law today. Intellectual property law crosses all aspects of science, technology, business, the arts, and international trade. As these fields change, new intellectual property issues will continue to develop. Under the leadership of a full-time director and part-time associate director, the Center for Intellectual Property Law offers JD, MS, and LLM candidates, as well as practicing attorneys and paralegals, specialized training in the developing issues and features of intellectual property law and its important impacts on society and our future endeavors.
